5’1″ baby grand
1 in stock
Out of several hundred piano makers in business in America in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, Charles M. Stieff pianos are among the few piano makers of their time still remembered and respected today, at least within the piano business. Founded in Baltimore, Maryland in 1842, Stieff pianos survived the Great Depression and two world wars before finally closing in 1951. Unlike many of their contemporaneous rivals, they were never sold to a larger piano company or conglomerate and remained family-owned until the end. Sometimes referred to in their day as the “poor man’s Steinway” Stieff pianos outlasted their more famous Baltimore rival Knabe* and many better-known American piano makers of their era. This particular Stieff baby grand was restored including all new strings and tuning pins, all-new Renner hammers, shanks, and flanges, all new damper felts, key bushings, new solid brass casters, and pedals. Its lovely mahogany cabinet is original, and though not flawless, is amazingly clean for its age. This piano should not need another restoration for decades. Just like every piano we sell, it carries our 10-year warranty on all parts and labor and will be going strong for decades to come. If you are looking for a beautiful, affordable American grand, don’t pass this one by.
*Technically Knabe pianos are still in production today but have changed hands numerous times since the Knabe family sold the company in 1908. Today, they are made in Korea by Samick.
