This model is part of the X-Series of Yamaha upright pianos made between 1975 and 1998. The most distinguishing feature of the “X” models, such as this piano, is the radial back posts located at the back of the piano, which add approximately 70 lbs to the piano’s weight and enhance tone projection, power, and sustain. The result is a noticeable upgrade in tone and touch from the average Yamaha upright, which will be very obvious to the demanding pianist or teacher who prefers a grand piano but must have an upright. The presence of sound vents in the front panel further adds to the vivid tone of these models. This model was designed as an upgraded version of the already very capable Yamaha U3 model. The closest equivalent model today is the YUS3, which is priced at $21,199 and DOES NOT include the radial back post design of the X-Series. In short, this high-performance upright is capable of meeting the requirements of everyone from students to professional pianists. This piano is in mint condition inside and out, with decades of healthy life ahead of it.
